ABSTRACTION AND LANDSCAPE “I am exploring the essence of landscape. How little does one have to paint for the viewer to recognize the painting as a landscape? These Paintings range from a more representational rendering through abstraction. My goal is to capture the lushness of visible world with sinuous brush.” Sally Holcomb Blackman – the artist

Helfield’s collection Souvenirs de Paris will be featured in Jadranka Café Pastries from May 16 to July 4, with a special reception on June 6 from 2 to 5 p.m. In the artists own words on her inspiration for this collection: “The paintings in this exhibition are based on sketches and photographs I took during a painting trip to Paris last year with a group of painters that included my daughter and granddaughter, which was a special joy. I was completely captivated by the joie de vivre of the people I saw eating, drinking and socializing in the cafés and bistros. To me they epitomized the spirit of this exciting city.
Azra Brkan is born in Zenica, I graduated from the University of Sarajevo.
My occupation for twenty years was teaching German as a second
language, but besides teaching I was drawing and painting all that time. Like most artists I started from early years and continued through all my life.
Painting for me is pure joy, passion and escape from everyday
pressures. I express in my own way where I see beauty experimenting with
different techniques, but drawing portraits seems to be my first true
love.
Speaking of food, Jadranka Pastries in Etobicoke, specializes in gorgeous, Viennese-style pastries and cakes at incredible prices, recently celebrated its fifth anniversary with a big, sweet pastry party and an expansion of their business. Brother-and-sister team of Vanja Ljuboje and Ljilja Jamakosmanovic -- whose grandparents were well-known pastry chefs back in their native Sarajevo -- celebrated the big event by expanding their little shop into an impressive, airy storefront operation with elegant artwork adorning one side of the store, and a sparkling dessert glass case brimming with mouth-watering treats on the other. In the five years the bakery has expanded, it's also grown to serve more than twenty specialty shops, supermarkets and restaurants throughout southwestern Ontario.
